Here are five types of foods that have been linked to an increased risk of diabetes.
Foods made with white flour and sugar such as breads, muffins, cakes, crackers and pasta, are low in fibre, vitamins and minerals.
Processed carbohydrates
Drinks like sodas, sweet tea, fruit drinks and lemonade can lead to weight gain and increase your risk of getting type 2 diabetes.
Sugar-sweetened beverages
These unhealthy fats are found in dairy products such as butter, whole milk, cream, cheese, fatty meats, fried foods, and packaged baked goods.
Saturated and trans fats
Hot dogs, bacon, and deli meats have higher levels of sodium and nitrites, which not only put you at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes but also heart disease.
Processed meats
Foods with added sugars, especially fructose, cause glucose levels to rapidly spike. These include sweets such as candy, cakes, cookies, ice cream and even sauces and salad dressings.
