Do not only worship Kubera on Dhanteras. Be sure to worship Dhanvantari as well. This brings blessings of both wealth and health.
On the auspicious day of Dhanteras, buy gold, silver, brass, or steel utensils. Avoid buying iron, plastic, or black- colored items on this day.
There is also a tradition of buying a new broom on Dhanteras. However, do not simply throw out the old broom from the house.
Keep the old broom in the southwest direction, and when taking it outside the house at the nishith (night) time, fold your hands in respect.
On the auspicious day of Dhanteras, avoid consuming tamasic items such as garlic and onions. Also, avoid eating meat or consuming alcohol.
If you are purchasing utensils on Dhanteras, do not bring them home empty. Fill them with water or some sweet item before bringing them into the house.
