Singapore tops global passport rankings, overtaking Japan as the most powerful passport

With visa-free travel to 192 of 227 international locations, Singapore has surpassed Japan to claim the title of most powerful passport in the world.

The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of visa-free destinations that their holders can visit, and the report is updated quarterly.

With visa-free travel to 190 destinations, Germany, Italy and Spain tie for second spot, while Japan slides to third with travel to 189 locations.

The United States has dropped two spots to ninth, while the United Kingdom has risen to fourth after suffering a dip as a result of Brexit.

With limited visa-free access to only 27, 29 and 30 places, respectively, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria have the weakest passports globally.

With access to 57 countries without a visa, India's passport is now ranked 80th globally, up by five spots from last year.
