When auroras were seen in India in 2024

In India, the auroras were observed from Ladakh and Hanle, where stable auroral red arcs were captured - a rare sight in this region

The auroras were seen as far south as Florida, Mexico, the Bahamas, Italy, Spain, Algeria, Turkey, Iran, and even Australia and New Zealand.

This widespread aurora display was caused by a G4 (severe) to G5 (extreme) geomagnetic storm, one of the strongest in over 20 years.

The last time a storm of this magnitude occurred was in 2003, causing power outages and damaging transformers in some regions

The intense solar activity responsible for the storm is part of the sun's 11-year cycle, which is expected to remain active for a few more years.
