A bronze medal in the current World Wrestling Championships made legendary wrestler Bajrang Punia the only Indian to win four medals at the event, which is held in Belgrade, Serbia.
In one of the 65 kg bronze medal matches, Sebastian C Rivera of Puerto Rico and Bajrang, who previously won a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, battled it out to a close 11-9 victory on points.
In the repechage round, Bajrang, who fell to John Michael Diakomihalis of the USA in the quarterfinals, defeated Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia 7-6 on points to go to the bronze medal match.
Third bronze medal at the worlds for Bajrang. The well-known Indian wrestler had previously won bronze in 2013, silver in 2018, and bronze in 2019.
With a 30-person squad, India competed in the current World Championships, however the country only managed to win two medals.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya, a silver medalist at the Olympics in Tokyo, crashed out before the finish line and was unable to place.
Along with winning a bronze medal in the World Championships in the women’s 53kg division, Vinesh Phogat also won a bronze medal.
To win the bronze medal, Vinesh defeated Swedish opponent Emma Malmgren 8-0.
