Mumbai Court Clears Shilpa Shetty in Richard Gere Kiss Case, Putting Controversy to Rest

A plea filed against the magistrate’s ruling acquitting Shilpa Shetty in an indecent kissing case was dismissed by Mumbai’s sessions court.

Shilpa Shetty’s appeal against the magistrate’s ruling acquitting her in an indecent kissing case involving Hollywood star Richard Gere was denied by Mumbai’s sessions court.

Richard Gere kissed Shilpa Shetty in front of everyone on stage at a public event in 2007, and Shilpa Shetty was charged as a result. S.C. Jadhav, Additional Sessions Judge, dismissed the case. Sadly, no detailed order information is currently available.

On 15th of April 2007, at an AIDS awareness programme in Rajasthan, this public kissing incident occurred 16 years ago. In this occasion, Richard Gere kissed Shilpa Shetty in front of everyone on stage, prompting outrage from around the country, with many calling the behaviour disgusting and an affront to the country’s culture.

In Rajasthan, Shetty and Gere were accused under multiple sections of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) and the ITA (Information Technology Act). Under the directions of the Supreme Court, the case was relocated to Mumbai in 2017.

In January 2022, a magistrate’s court absolved Shetty of the charge, stating she appeared to be a victim of behaviour of Gere.
