Indian billionaire who co-founded Asian Paints passes away

Indian billionaire and Asian Paints Ltd. co-founder, Ashwin Suryakant Dani, passed away at the age of 79 on September 28.  Dani was the non-executive chairman of India’s largest paint company. He was reportedly the second-generation scion of the family that co-founded the company.

Dani served as Vice Chairman, Managing Director, and Non-Executive Board Chairman. He joined the Board in 1970. He was Company Vice Chairman and Managing Director from 1998 until 2009. Asian Paints said he was a Non-Executive Director and Vice Chairman of the Board of Company since 2009.

Dani was Board and Company Chairman from 2018 to 2021. His father Suryakant co-founded Asian Paints.

Ashwin Dani and his family had 7.7 billion USD (Rs 64,000 crore) in net worth, ranking 293 globally, according to Forbes.

Dani has led the company to technological excellence and introduced numerous innovative goods to India. He introduced computerized color matching to India. The paint, plastics, printing ink, and textile industries utilise this principle.

In 1975, Asian Paints was the first paint manufacturer in India and Asia to use this approach.

He also helped establish the 50:50 industrial coatings joint venture between Asian Paints Limited and PPG Industries Inc., USA. He founded and is a director of PPG Asian Paints Private Limited, the first joint venture with PPG Industries Inc. in its 26th year.

He also helped switch water-thinnable paints from metal to plastic containers for decoration. He founded and promoted Loctite India, now Henkel Adhesive Technologies India.

Dani has also served on the President’s Advisory Council of The University of Akron, Akron, Ohio, USA, the Central Board of Trustees – Employees Provident Fund of the Government of India, FICCI’s Vice President, the Board of Governors of the U.D.C.T.
