To guarantee innovations reach the most needy, the Indian government has urged for fair access to key healthcare items and last-mile delivery. Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Bhagwant Khuba urged the second World Local Production Forum (WLPF) in Hague, Netherlands, to focus on “last-mile delivery of healthcare products to ensure that the benefits of innovations reach those who need them most and guarantee equitable access to essential healthcare products.”

WLPF is a WHO initiative.

According to an official statement, Khuba said the Forum must focus on marketing, upscaling regional manufacturing, efficient procurement and delivery systems, and repurposing infrastructure for health emergency coordination. He added this gathering is vital for sharing diagnostic countermeasure development and manufacturing problems, triumphs, and experiences.

“We must work together to find new ways to provide sustainable and fair access to these vital instruments.

Khuba added that COVID-19 and other pandemics in the 21st century have exposed global supply chain vulnerabilities and inequalities in medical countermeasures.

Unsuitable diagnostic instruments exacerbated outbreaks, emphasizing the need for worldwide cooperation on sustainable, cheap diagnostic countermeasures. He said countries have realized the necessity of cross-sector collaboration for equity in creative solutions.

The Minister stated, “Lack of technology transfer stands out as a formidable barrier.” Local production has substantial challenges in translating research into product development.

Innovation in healthcare technology requires effective cooperation to overcome validation, production, and distribution challenges. He noted that regulatory system capacity improvement and competent technical staff are needed.

The Minister said India supplies 60% of the global vaccine supply, is responsible for 20-22% of generic exports, and serves over 200 countries with its pharmaceutical exports.

The minister also noted that many Indian organizations have promoted innovation and entrepreneurship, which attracts creative brains and improves the health sector.

The government provides money, mentoring, incubation space, and acts as a bridge between academia and industry to guarantee rapid commercialization of inventions, he noted.

Conclusion

The World Local Production Forum (WLPF) should focus on last-mile delivery of key healthcare products to guarantee innovations reach people who need them most, according to the Indian government. The WHO meeting must focus on marketing, upscaling regional manufacturing, efficient procurement and delivery systems, and repurposing infrastructure for health emergency coordination. Diagnostic countermeasure development and production problems, accomplishments, and experiences are shared during the meeting.

Epidemics like COVID-19 have exposed supply chain vulnerabilities and inequalities in medical countermeasures in the 21st century. To expand worldwide access, cooperation for sustainable, cheap diagnostic countermeasures is needed. Inadequate diagnostic tools aggravated outbreaks.

Local production struggles to translate research into product development due to technology transfer issues. To commercialize novel healthcare innovations, validation, production, and distribution must be coordinated. Regulatory system capacity building and trained technical staff are needed.

India’s pharmaceutical industries now supply high-quality pharmaceuticals at low prices, expanding global healthcare access. To accelerate innovative commercialization, the government provides funding, mentoring, incubation space, and a bridge between academia and industry.
