Your payment app may soon disable your UPI ID if it has been inactive for over a year. To minimize unintentional financial transfers, the NPCI has asked payment apps to disable inactive UPI IDs by December 31. To re-link, users must keep their UPI IDs active for less than a year and re-register.

By December 31, payment apps must disable UPI IDs inactive for over a year, per the NPCI. This prevents inadvertent financial transfers when customers change mobile numbers without unlinking them from the banking system.

TRAI allows telecom companies to give deactivated numbers to new users after 90 days. If associated cellphone numbers aren’t updated, accidental transfers may occur. Third-party app providers (TPAP) and payment service providers (PSP) must act by December 31.

UPI IDs should be active and unused for less than a year for Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm users. They should verify that no associated phone numbers have been dormant for three months.

TPAPs and PSP banks must identify dormant UPI IDs and numbers per NPCI’s circular. Such IDs will be deleted for inward credit transactions, and the UPI mapper will erase their phone numbers.

To reestablish the link, deactivated UPI ID users must re-register in their apps. Their UPI PIN lets them make payments and non-financial transactions.

This approach improves security and prevents issues with obsolete and inactive UPI IDs, making digital payments safer for users.

From January 1, 2024, the central government will introduce new SIM card laws that will significantly affect the SIM card acquisition process.

Conclusion

To minimize unintentional financial transfers, the National Payments Corporation (NPCI) has asked payment apps to disable UPI IDs dormant for over a year by December 31. UPI IDs must be active and unused for less than a year for Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm users. Third-party app providers (TPAP) and payment service providers (PSP) must act by the deadline. This change should improve security and prevent issues with obsolete and inactive UPI IDs.
