The Indian cricket team will be playing a 3-match T20I series against Afghanistan starting from today (11 Jan 2024) and the big thing is that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back in the Indian T20 squad after 14 months.
The last T20I played by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli was the semi-final match of the T20 World Cup 2022 which India lost to England and since then, they were playing only in ODIs and test matches. Everyone felt that the selectors have moved on from Rohit and Virat as far as the shortest format is concerned but the comeback of both the senior cricketers means that there is a change in the thinking of the selectors.
The former Indian cricketer Kiran More opened up on this matter and he feels that both Rohit and Virat have earned their place with their performances in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the recently concluded South Africa tour.
Kiran More said in an interview, “Your (selectors) thinking changed slightly after two years. I don’t know what their thinking was earlier but both gave fantastic performances in the World Cup and looked in form in the South Africa series as well. The way Rohit Sharma captained in the World Cup and we reached the final as well, he played exceptional innings, the aggression he showed, so the thinking changed slightly. So both have been recalled and it is very good news for Indian cricket.”
Talking about Hardik Pandya, Kiran More said, “Hardik needs to get fit and start playing cricket first, that’s extremely necessary. Once he does that, he definitely ticks all the boxes. He has also been the captain earlier. We don’t know the selectors’ thinking, what has gone on inside, but Hardik will come into the team as soon as he gets fit. He needs to play matches before the World Cup. We don’t know when he will start, probably in the IPL, but he is preparing hard. He is the world’s top all-rounder and every team will want to have him.”
We certainly agree with Kiran More, what about you?
