Health Ministry reports 198 fresh COVID-19 cases

Active cases in India dropped to 1,764 after 198 fresh COVID-19 cases occurred in one day. The Delta wave in April–June 2021 was the most severe of three pandemic waves in the country. National recovery rate is 98.81%, with almost 4.4 crore persons recovered.

India’s Union health ministry reported 198 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday, while active cases dropped to 1,764. Punjab had one fatality in 24 hours, according to 8 am data.

Until December 5, daily cases declined to double digits, but a new COVID-19 strain and cold weather increased them.

Official sources claimed that on December 31, 2023, 841 new cases were registered, 0.2% of the peak incidence in May 2021.

Most of the 1,764 ongoing cases (92%) are healing at home.

“The currently available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is neither leading to an exponential rise in the new cases nor a surge in the hospitalisation and mortality,” a source said.

COVID-19 has spread across India in three waves, with the Delta wave in April–June 2021 seeing the most cases and deaths.

On May 7, 2021, 4,14,188 new cases and 3,915 fatalities peaked.

Over 4.5 crore people have been afflicted and 5.3 lakh have died since the pandemic began in early 2020.

The ministry’s website reports over 4.4 crore illness survivors and a nationwide recovery rate of 98%.

The website reports 220.67 crore COVID-19 vaccination doses administered in India.
