On Wednesday, Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of Lucknow Super Giants, finally broke silence on the swirling rumors regarding the future of KL Rahul as the franchise captain. This statement came just a day after Rahul, India’s wicketkeeper-batter, visited Goenka at his office in Alipore, Kolkata.
The rumor mill had been in overdrive since a tense moment earlier this year during the IPL 2024 season when a video surfaced showing an intense exchange between Goenka and Rahul following the team’s heavy defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad. The cricket community did not hold back in criticizing Goenka for his behavior, which led to speculation about Rahul’s future with the franchise. However, this was later downplayed as a “frank discussion” between an owner and his captain, and Goenka even hosted Rahul for dinner to clarify matters.
Despite this public display of reconciliation, whispers persisted that all was not well between Goenka and Rahul, with many doubting whether Rahul would continue with the franchise for the 2025 season. Some reports suggested that Rahul’s former team, Royal Challengers Bangalore, might be looking to bring him back.
With speculation growing, Goenka chose to address the rumors about Rahul’s retention. However, he kept the suspense intact, stating, “I don’t want to comment on speculation. All I will say is KL Rahul is family.”
