World Food Day: A Call to End Hunger and Promote Sustainable Food Practices

World Food Day is celebrated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, every year on 16th October to raise awareness about scarcity of food and the challenges associated with it. It aims to implement sustainable practices globally that call for equal distribution of food resources in order to end hunger.

Every human being has the right to healthy food for a better life and a better future. Farmers worldwide produce enough food to reach every table, yet, millions go hungry for days! This may be because of end number of reasons such as economic downturns, conflicts, war, weather shocks, inequality, pandemic and so on. The impact of food shortage is borne mainly by the agricultural households and the poor who are more vulnerable. This situation also throws light on the inequalities within and across the countries.

Over 2.8 billion people worldwide are not able to afford a healthy diet. This in turn leads to various forms of malnutrition and related diseases. Malnutrition and humger is further aggravated by extreme weather conditions and conflicts across countries.  To prevent the situation from getting worse, this World Food Day and after that, let us all raise awareness about the benefits of conserving our natural resources and implementing sustainable practices to safeguard our future generations.

What Can We Do?

We, as citizens need to adopt a Zero hunger policy and support local producers and using the earth’s resources judiciously. If we make small changes in our daily tasks, lead a sustainable lifestyle and try to reduce waste, the positive effect will surely be visible in the near future. World Food Day is not just a reflection of the present but a serious call for action! By working towards food security, sustainable agricultural practices and nutrition, we can look forward to a world where noone sleeps on a hungry stomach. Food is one of the most basic needs along with air and water and we should do our best to work towards ensuring adequate food for everyone.
