India is set to renew its Test rivalry with New Zealand in a three-match series starting on Wednesday in Bengaluru. However, persistent rain in the Karnataka capital has already caused delays on the opening day.
Currently leading the World Test Championship (WTC) points table, a series win would greatly enhance India’s chances of reaching the final. On the other hand, New Zealand, the inaugural WTC champions, are in sixth place, with only three victories from seven matches. Their recent 2-0 defeat to Sri Lanka has left them struggling for form.
Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg believes New Zealand faces a tough challenge against India on their home turf. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Hogg predicted a commanding series win for the hosts.
“Based on how New Zealand played in Sri Lanka, I don’t think they’ll be able to overcome their issues against spin,” Hogg remarked. “That’s where India will easily dominate the series.”
Hogg also pointed out New Zealand’s lack of experience in their pace attack, with former captain Tim Southee being the only seasoned bowler. While praising young pacer William O’Rourke’s performances in Sri Lanka, Hogg feels O’Rourke is still developing. The injury to Ben Sears has further complicated New Zealand’s situation.
“O’Rourke has great heart and never gives up,” Hogg said. “He’s consistent, though not the quickest. I hope Ben Sears gets a chance because his height and extra bounce could add variety against India.”
With India’s strong record at home and New Zealand’s recent struggles, the series promises to be intriguing. Whether the Kiwis can defy the odds and challenge India remains to be seen.
