The decision to cast Kartik Aaryan as the lead in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 initially sparked mixed reactions. Many fans of the original were disappointed with Akshay Kumar’s absence, though Kartik’s followers celebrated the fresh take he would bring to the beloved horror-comedy series. In a recent interview, director Anees Bazmee shared insights on this casting choice, the challenges faced, and his ongoing camaraderie with Akshay Kumar.
While the actual reason for Akshay Kumar not returning remains confidential, Bazmee clarified that it was a mutual decision to move forward with a different lead.
“For some reason, Akshay ji couldn’t do the sequel. And the producers or I didn’t want to force him,” Bazmee explained, noting Akshay’s undeniable impact on the original but emphasizing the importance of respecting his decision.
Bazmee revealed that he and the team approached Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 with earnestness, crafting the film with Kartik Aaryan in mind. Though the sequel’s teaser received positive reactions, there was considerable skepticism surrounding its success, especially due to Akshay’s absence.
“When the trailer came out, people told me it’s fabulous but added that the film won’t fare well,” Bazmee recalled, citing the widespread perception that the film couldn’t thrive without its original star.
Despite initial apprehensions, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 performed well at the box office, with audiences enjoying Kartik’s performance. Anees Bazmee expressed satisfaction with how the audience embraced Kartik in the role, showing that the film could thrive even with a new lead.
“People liked Kartik as much as they had liked Akshay ji,” he observed, marking the success as a tribute to the hard work put into the film.
Looking forward, Bazmee hinted that he wouldn’t hesitate to approach Akshay for a future role or cameo in the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise. He described a strong bond with Akshay, founded on mutual respect and trust:
“I know that I can reach out to him anytime,” Bazmee said, adding that he shares a rare connection with Akshay, someone he feels comfortable insisting upon for a role if the character suits him.
