The renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has officially announced that he will begin filming the highly anticipated sequel to his 1983 classic Masoom early next year. Titled Masoom 2, the film will see the return of original stars Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah, whose performances in the original are etched in Bollywood history. Joining them will be acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee, known for his versatility and previous collaboration with Kapur in Bandit Queen, and the director’s daughter, Kaveri Kapur.
Shekhar Kapur shared this exciting news during a press conference at the 55th International Film Festival of India in New Delhi. Reflecting on a recent incident he described as “almost fated,” he revealed, “I will start shooting for Masoom 2 in February-March 2025. The script is ready.” In a twist befitting cinematic drama, Kapur recounted how he left the script behind on a Dubai-bound flight, only for it to be returned by a flight attendant with a note acknowledging the film’s enduring legacy. “A script that was lost comes back; it’s something predestined,” Kapur said, underscoring the project’s special significance.
While Masoom 2 will introduce a fresh storyline, Kapur assured fans that it will preserve the core values and themes that made the original so impactful.
Shekhar Kapur also expressed his intent to re-release the original Masoom in theaters, hoping to remind audiences of its timeless narrative. Released in 1983, the film featured a stellar cast, including Tanuja, Supriya Pathak, Saeed Jaffrey, and young stars Jugal Hansraj, Aradhana, and Urmila Matondkar. The movie explored complex themes of family, betrayal, and forgiveness, resonating deeply with generations of viewers.
Fans can expect Masoom 2 to build on this legacy, bringing together beloved characters and new talent to explore the depths of familial bonds and moral dilemmas, just as its predecessor did decades ago.
