In a recent interview with Curly Tales, veteran actor Anupam Kher shared his unique perspective on homeownership, a choice that diverges from the traditional mindset.
Anupam Kher, known for his candid reflections on life, explained why he prefers to live in rented spaces rather than owning a home, seeing it as a way to preserve freedom and flexibility. “I live in a rented apartment because I decided I don’t want to own a house. Pay the rent every month and live. The money that you will buy a house for, keep it in your bank account and use that to pay your rent instead,” he stated.
Anupam Kher expressed that his choice aligns with his personal values, placing freedom above the conventional aspirations tied to homeownership. Instead of investing heavily in property, he feels it is more practical to save and enjoy the flexibility renting provides. For Anupam Kher, this approach also sidesteps potential family conflicts that can sometimes arise over inherited property, explaining, “It’s better to give after you go many years later and to distribute the money rather than people fighting for your house.”
Despite his preference for renting, Anupam Kher did make an exception for his mother, fulfilling her wish to own a home in Shimla. Reflecting on the story, he shared how, years ago, he had casually asked his mother if there was anything she wanted. Surprisingly, she requested a house in Shimla, a place filled with family memories. Although Kher’s family hadn’t lived there since his father’s passing, he honored his mother’s wish and bought the home, creating a special place for her.
