Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has expressed his disappointment with the Film Federation of India (FFI) after Laapataa Ladies, India’s official Oscar entry in the Best International Feature category, failed to make the shortlist for the 97th Academy Awards. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film was submitted as the country’s representative but did not qualify for the next round.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Hansal mocked the FFI for their repeated choices of films for Oscar submissions.
Sharing the list of shortlisted films in the category, he wrote, “Film Federation of India does it again! Their strike rate and selection of films year after year is impeccable,” clearly implying dissatisfaction with their decision-making process.

Hansal’s comments resonated with others in the film and music industry. Musician Ricky Kej and several social media users also criticized the FFI’s selection process, suggesting that other films may have had a stronger chance at the Oscars.
