Rohit Sharma’s Bold Plan: Eyeing 2027 ODI World Cup, No Plans to Quit Tests

Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma is reportedly determined to extend his international career until the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Not only does he aim to feature in the marquee event, but he is also unwilling to step away from Test cricket anytime soon.

According to a report, Rohit has already charted out a meticulous plan to maintain his fitness and batting prowess. With the assistance of men’s senior assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, he is working towards sustaining the high standards demanded by international cricket. His future, however, hinges largely on his performance in the upcoming IPL 2025, which is expected to be a defining phase in his career.

Nayar, who previously played alongside Rohit for Mumbai, has been a key figure in shaping several Indian cricketers’ careers, including KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik. Renowned for his ability to help players unlock their true potential, he has earned Rohit’s trust and admiration. The Indian skipper has credited Nayar in the past for playing a crucial role in his success.

Speculation about Rohit’s international future was rampant before the 2025 Champions Trophy. At 37, and having already announced his T20I retirement following India’s victorious campaign in the T20 World Cup last year, many questioned whether he would continue in the 50-over and Test formats. Adding to the uncertainty, he had voluntarily stepped down from the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, openly admitting that his performances had not met expectations. The idea of a 40-year-old leading India in a World Cup seemed far-fetched to many.

But cricket is a game of unpredictable twists, and Rohit Sharma silenced all doubters in spectacular fashion. India’s exhilarating triumph over New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy saw him deliver a match-winning knock of 76, earning him the Player of the Match award. With this victory, he also became only the second Indian captain to secure two ICC titles, cementing his legacy as one of the greats.

Addressing the media in the post-match press conference, Rohit made it clear that he had no intentions of stepping away from the game. In the middle of India’s euphoric celebrations, he was also overheard reaffirming his commitment to Virat Kohli in an impromptu conversation. His message was loud and clear—Rohit Sharma isn’t going anywhere!
