Jaya Bachchan recently took a dig at Akshay Kumar 2017 film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, questioning the choice of its title. Speaking at an event, the actress-turned-politician openly admitted that she was hesitant to watch the movie because of its name.
Sharing her thoughts, she remarked, “Just look at the title of the film; I would never go to watch a film with such a name. Yeh koi naam hai? Is that really a name?” She then turned to the audience, asking if they would be comfortable watching a movie with such a title. Although a few members raised their hands, she responded with surprise, stating, “Among so many people, hardly four people want to watch the film; it’s very sad. Yeh toh flop hai (It is a flop).”
The film, released in 2017, tells the story of Keshav, who falls in love with Jaya Bachchan (played by Bhumi Pednekar) and marries her. However, after moving into his home, Jaya is dismayed to find no toilet in the house. Determined to resolve the issue, Keshav embarks on a mission to build one, only to face resistance from his family and the entire village due to deeply rooted religious beliefs.
Despite the initial skepticism around its title, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha aimed to highlight the crucial issue of sanitation in rural India, bringing attention to the need for proper hygiene facilities in households across the country.
