Thousands of users were impacted after a significant outage on Saturday morning, which forced Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services to cease operating throughout India. This outage caused disruptions to UPI services on several platforms, including Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, Bhim, and others. Additionally, it covered significant financial organizations, including Kotak Mahindra Bank, State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, and others. Numerous users across complained that they were unable to use UPI for transactions. Additionally, this is the fourth time in a month that UPI services have been interrupted.

India’s UPI Services Are Down

According to the most recent information from DownDetector, over 2,000 users reported the outage. Around 11:26 AM IST, users started experiencing problems with UPI transactions, and by 1:02 PM IST, they were at their peak. This comes days after two significant outages occurred within a week on India’s most popular digital payment system.

Acknowledging this, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) sent a statement on its official X handle. The tweet says, “NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused.”

UPI services suffer from multiple outages.

UPI services have been interrupted across the nation four times now. On March 26, 2025, customers of several UPI apps could not transact for over three hours, marking the first known outage. On March 31, the second significant outage occurred. Users also complained about problems with payment processing, which NPCI explained were caused by bank-side hold-ups after the fiscal year. However, on April 2, 2025, there was a temporary interruption because of “latency in the UPI network.”

Several people voiced their displeasure with the downtime on social networking platform X. One customer wrote, “I found out that UPI was not taking any payments, and I am stuck in the airport with a delayed flight and a lost wallet with all my cash and cards.” These days, UPI crashes occur far too frequently, trapping many people. We depend on it daily, but the system continues to let us down,” another X user wrote.
