COVID Case in Singapore and Hong Kong

More than 5 years after the COVID-19 pandemic was proclaimed a worldwide pandemic, the world has continued to deal with the virus, albeit in varied capacities. Despite the widespread belief that people have become immune to the virus (since everyone has contracted it at some point, even if they are unaware of it), the sporadic increase in new cases raises some concerns.

Hong Kong and Singapore have cases

Hong Kong and Singapore have recently reported a dramatic increase in COVID-19 cases. The public and health authorities are concerned about this new wave. Let’s find out more.

What does the data say?

Singapore experienced a sharp rise in COVID-19 infections around the beginning of May 2025. In only one week, cases increased by 28%, from roughly 11,100 in the final week of April to about 14,200 in the first week of May. During this time, hospitalizations also rose by almost 30%. Similarly, with an increasing number of severe cases and fatalities reported, Hong Kong is seeing its most excellent COVID-19 activity in a year. The week ending May 3 saw 31 COVID-related deaths in the city, which is a one-year high.

Quickly spread

Both cities are highly populated, which explains why the virus spreads so swiftly. Furthermore, sewage surveillance in both locations revealed high amounts of the virus, demonstrating widespread community transmission.
