Actor Dakota Johnson and Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin appear to have finally called it quits for good after an eight-year relationship that was intermittent. The star was seen out and about in New York City on June 2 without her engagement ring, so it looks like things are more “final” this time.
Dakota, 35, and Chris, 48, were first connected in 2017. Aside from a few high-profile public appearances, they have kept their romance low-key. Chris’s January trip to India for Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour, which he accompanied, and the May 16 Malibu Yoga class they were seen leaving together serve as excellent examples.
According to a PEOPLE report based on sources, the two have been engaged for “years,” yet rumors about their relationship only started circulating in 2020. Despite the sporadic breakup rumors the couple has endured, representatives or sources have consistently returned with assurances that everything is OK in paradise. However, the journal claims that “it feels final this time” in a recent exclusive source-based story.
Another infallible sign? Dakota’s appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers was distinguished by her seductive, all-sheer, black “revenge dress.” Instead, Dakota wore a bare dress suit from Nensi Dojaka’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection to promote her new film Materialists, which also stars Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. Picture delicate strands of white tulle twisted around and around to swoop into a mermaid-like hemline with ruffles. Oh. The ensemble was finished with a YSL shoulder bag, golden hoops, black shoes, and cat-eye sunglasses.
As a reminder, the vengeance dress gets its name from Princess Diana’s historic charity event at the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens in June 1994, where she used fashion as her focal point. Her off-the-shoulder, black, silk evening gown by Christina Stambolian was and is said to have been a fashion-driven reaction to Prince Charles’s public declaration of love for Camilla when he was married to the Princess of Wales.
