Former England captain Jos Buttler anticipates that Shubman Gill’s leadership of the Indian Test team will strike a balance between the fiery demeanor of Virat Kohli and the placid approach of Rohit Sharma. Buttler, who played under Gill’s captaincy for the Gujarat Titans in the recent IPL 2025, described the 25-year-old as an “impressive young man” possessing a discernible “fight about him”.
Gill has taken over the reins of the Test team from Rohit, who retired in May. Kohli has also retired from Test cricket, leaving the Punjab batter with one of the youngest Indian squads in recent memory. The BCCI has placed its faith in Gill for this crucial role, opting for him over more senior players like Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul. This decision marks a significant gamble ahead of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, a country where India has not secured a Test series victory since 2007.
“He’s a really impressive player and an impressive young man,” Buttler shared with Stuart Broad on For the Love of Cricket. He continued, “He’s pretty calm and measured when he speaks, but [it’s] interesting, I feel like on the field he’s got a bit of fight about him; a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he’ll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit.”
Shubman Gill is currently gearing up for the upcoming 5-match test series against England.
