Vivek Agnihotri has recently offered his perspective on Deepika Padukone’s notable appearance at a student protest at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 2020. This event, which occurred just days before the release of her film Chhapaak, garnered significant media attention as Deepika silently demonstrated solidarity with students in the aftermath of a campus attack, drawing both commendation and criticism.
In a recent interview, Vivek Agnihotri expressed doubt regarding Deepika Padukone’s grasp of the political implications of her visit. He stated, “I can guarantee that Deepika had no idea about JNU politics when she went there,” implying that her public presence might have been orchestrated by her team.
When queried if he was suggesting Deepika lacked the intelligence to comprehend the situation, Agnihotri clarified his stance, remarking, “It’s not about being dumb. Her PR must’ve told her that this is a good opportunity to promote your film, because the university is associated with politics, and the film is also political. If she had known, she wouldn’t have come.”
He further underscored the inherent risks associated with venturing into political territory, even inadvertently. Vivek Agnihotri concluded by saying, “You play with fire, you get burned,” adding that Deepika is an intelligent woman who likely would not have made the appearance had she been fully aware of its potential repercussions.
