Day one of the Headingley Test against England saw a remarkable display from the Indian batting lineup, with captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal leading the charge. Their magnificent centuries propelled India to a commanding 359/3 by stumps, drawing high praise from former India captain Sourav Ganguly.

Gill and Jaiswal’s exceptional performances strongly signaled their readiness to shoulder India’s batting responsibilities in the post-Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma era. The duo forged a crucial 129-run partnership for the third wicket, rescuing India from a precarious 92/2 after the quick dismissals of KL Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan. Their stand propelled India past the 200-run mark, setting a strong foundation for the innings.

Taking to social media, Ganguly lauded the team’s efforts, stating, “How good was India today? Start of a series day 1 .. so much improvement in Subhman Gill’s test match batting in away conditions .. Yashasvi as usual superb again .. looked a quality team. A long series awaits @bcci.”

While Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten alongside Gill at the close of play, the centuries from Jaiswal and Gill held a deeper significance beyond simply giving India a strong start in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. With the recent retirements of former captains Kohli and Rohit, who were stalwarts at the crucial No. 4 and opening positions, the current Indian batting lineup has been perceived as somewhat lacking in experience.

Though neither Jaiswal nor Gill are new to the challenging Test arena, there had been considerable anticipation regarding how this new generation of Indian stars would fill the substantial void left by their predecessors. However, based on their stellar performances today, the future of Indian batting appears incredibly promising.

Keep going like this, Indian team!
