Shubman Gill etched his name into the annals of Indian cricket history on Friday, June 20, by becoming only the fifth Indian cricketer to score a century in his inaugural Test as captain.

The 25-year-old right-handed batter, who was appointed India’s 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025, made a memorable debut in the leadership role.

During the third session of the opening day’s play at Headingley in Leeds, Gill reached the coveted 100-run mark, placing him in an exclusive club alongside cricketing legends. His feat mirrors that of Virat Kohli, who also scored a century (115) in his first Test as India’s captain.

The pioneering Indian cricketer to achieve this milestone was Vijay Hazare, followed by the illustrious Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar, before Kohli and now Gill added their names to this prestigious list.

Well Played Skipper!
