Cricket commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has openly admitted his initial disapproval of Shubman Gill being appointed captain of the India men’s Test team over Jasprit Bumrah. Manjrekar still believes it wasn’t the “right decision.” Despite his reservations, he clarified that he never doubted Gill would “be a failure,” citing the young opener’s inherent temperament for success.
Manjrekar’s comments surfaced shortly after Gill’s spectacular century on his captaincy debut. On Friday, the opening day of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Headingley, Gill remained unbeaten with an impressive 127 runs from 175 deliveries. Rishabh Pant provided strong support, reaching 65 not out, after earlier contributions from centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and KL Rahul (42). India concluded the day in a dominant position at 359 for 3, firmly in control of the match.
“I was against it,” Manjrekar stated regarding Gill’s appointment, as quoted by the Hindustan Times. “Let’s be very honest, because I thought Bumrah would have been the better choice and the logical choice, without really thinking too much about the future, looking into the crystal ball. So I don’t think it was the right decision,” Manjrekar further elaborated on JioStar. “But was Shubman Gill going to be a failure as captain? No.”
