Shubman Gill has had a phenomenal start to the ongoing five-Test series against England. Leading India for the first time, Gill has already amassed 585 runs at an average of 146.25, including three centuries—one of them a double ton. His brilliant innings in Birmingham not only helped India take the lead but also shattered several long-standing records, such as the highest match aggregate by an Indian batter. With three Tests remaining, more milestones are within reach for this young captain.

1. Most Runs as Captain in a Test Series

Gill is well on his way to challenging Don Bradman’s record of 810 runs in a single series as captain. Bradman achieved this during the 1936–37 Ashes. Gill needs 225 more runs to surpass the legendary figure.

Interestingly, Bradman’s record was also set in his first series as captain—just like Gill. If he scores beyond 810, Gill will hold the record for the most runs in a debut series as Test captain.

Among Indians, Sunil Gavaskar holds the record with 732 runs against the West Indies in 1978–79. Gill needs just 148 more runs to pass that mark.

2. Most Runs in a Test Series (Overall)

The overall record still belongs to Bradman, who scored a mammoth 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes. Gill would need an additional 390 runs to break that. Though it seems steep, he has already scored more than Bradman had at the same stage of the series.

For India, Gavaskar scored 774 runs in 1971 against the West Indies. Gill needs just 189 more to surpass that historic tally.

3. Most Centuries in a Serie

The West Indies’ Clyde Walcott scored five hundreds in a 1955 series against Australia. Gill currently has three centuries and needs two more to equal that rare feat. Among Indian captains, Gavaskar leads again with four centuries as captain across multiple series.

4. Fastest Captain to 1,000 Test Runs

Don Bradman reached 1,000 runs as captain in just 11 innings. Gill must score 415 more runs in his next six innings to break that record. For India, Gavaskar reached the milestone in 14 innings.

5. Most Runs Against England in a Series

Shubman Gill could also become the Indian batter with the most runs in a series against England. Yashasvi Jaiswal currently holds the record with 712 runs in a 2024 home series. Gill is just 127 runs short.

In England, Rahul Dravid scored 602 runs in 2002. Gill needs only 18 runs to surpass him. As captain, Virat Kohli leads with 655 runs in 2016—Gill is 91 runs away from eclipsing that.
