Comedian Kapil Sharma’s Kap’s Cafe in Canada has issued a strong statement following an incident late Wednesday night. The Surrey, British Columbia-based restaurant posted a statement on Instagram, saying that the incident has left them shocked. Even as they process it, they will not give up and will stand firm against violence.

“We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversations. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock, but we are not giving up,” the eatery said in the message.

Unknown attackers started shooting at the location. Harjeet Singh Laddi, a terrorist from Khalistani, later claimed responsibility for the firing. Laddi is linked to the outlawed organization Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and is on the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) most-wanted terrorist list.

The cafe also expressed gratitude to everyone who sent prayers and support.

“This cafe exists because you believe in what we’re building together. Let’s stand firm against violence and ensure Kap’s Cafe remains a place of warmth and community, the Instagram note further said.

Laddi cited one of Kapil Sharma’s previous remarks as the grounds for the dismissal, according to sources. However, it’s unclear whether the comic was intended to be threatened by the firing or if the cafe was the target.

Canadian journalist Sameer Kaushal said that approximately 12 rounds hit the eatery. He posted a video on X that showed numerous bullet holes in the cafe’s glass panes.

Surrey Police stated in a statement that they are investigating the shooting, any links to prior occurrences, and possible motivations. “There is currently no suspect information available to share,” it stated.

“On Thursday, July 10, at 1.50 am, Surrey Police Service was called to a business located in the 8400 block of 120 Street for a report of shots fired. Upon police arrival, it was quickly determined that shots were fired towards the business, damaging the property, while staff members were still present inside. There were no injuries to anyone at the business. SPS officers gathered evidence and canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance video,” the police statement said.

On June 21, comedian Kapil Sharma’s famous Show, “Kapil Sharma Show Season,” made its Netflix debut.
