The Maldives, known for its crystal-clear waters and luxurious resorts, is now making headlines for a very different reason. The island nation has introduced one of the world’s strictest anti-smoking laws — one that affects both its residents and visitors.
Beginning November 1, 2025, anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, will not be allowed to buy, use, or even possess tobacco products anywhere in the country. The new law, announced by the President’s Office, aims to create what the government calls a “smoke-free generation.” Officials believe this move will drastically reduce health problems linked to smoking and protect young people from the long-term harms of tobacco.
The policy applies equally to tourists, meaning even vacationers who fall within the banned age group will have to comply with the same rules. Authorities are also tightening regulations on products like alcohol and vaping. In fact, the Maldives had already banned the import, sale, and use of e-cigarettes for all age groups back in 2024.
Currently, smoking is restricted in many public spaces across the country, including offices, restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, and public transport. Those born before 2007 can still purchase cigarettes, but they must follow these existing restrictions.
Local officials have described the ban as a landmark public health measure, a decisive step toward protecting future generations from tobacco addiction. The Maldives hopes this bold move will not only safeguard its citizens but also inspire other nations to follow its lead in building a healthier, smoke-free future.
