Raaj Shaandilyaa Calls Ektaa Kapoor’s Allegations ‘Baseless Intimidation’

The Bhagam Bhag 2 director says Balaji Telefilms skipped civil court and went straight for criminal allegations — and wants the industry to take note.

One of Bollywood’s most anticipated comedy sequels has landed in the middle of a serious legal dispute. Director Raaj Shaandilyaa has issued a sharp public statement after producer Ektaa Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms reportedly levelled criminal allegations against him — and his message goes far beyond self-defence. He is speaking directly to the industry.

Raaj Shaandilyaa Fires Back at Balaji Telefilms

Raaj Shaandilyaa had signed a three-film deal with Ektaa Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms back in 2019, the same year his directorial debut Dream Girl turned Ayushmann Khurrana’s career around and established Raaj as a genuine commercial force. Bhagam Bhag 2, featuring Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal, was meant to be his next big project under that arrangement.

However, Raaj recently invoked his contractual rights and issued a termination notice to Balaji Telefilms. What followed, according to him, was not a civil court challenge — but something far more aggressive.

‘Exaggerated and Baseless Criminal Allegations’

In his statement published by Variety India, Raaj said that over two weeks had passed since the termination notice without Balaji approaching any civil court. Instead, he alleged, criminal accusations surfaced. “These accusations are wholly unfounded and appear to be nothing more than an attempt to intimidate and browbeat,” he stated, after having concluded that Balaji had no viable case to challenge the termination through proper legal channels.

The choice of criminal allegations over civil proceedings is the detail that stands out most here. It signals an escalation that Raaj clearly wants the industry to register. Therefore, his statement was not just a legal response — it was a deliberate public record.

What Actually Broke the Relationship

The rupture, reportedly, did not happen overnight. Raaj had already completed the script for his third contracted film, Sonam Bewafa Hai, fulfilling his creative obligations. However, communication from the production house began to feel intrusive and mistrustful, according to the Variety India report. That shift in tone, it appears, pushed Raaj toward termination.

This context matters. Raaj was not walking away from a project mid-development without cause. He had delivered on his end. The breakdown seems rooted in how Balaji communicated with him during the later stages of their association — and that distinction is central to his legal position.

Bhagam Bhag 2 Is Still Happening — With a New Cast

Despite the dispute, Raaj insists the film is not shelved. “Bhagam Bhag 2 is very much on track and the project will proceed as scheduled,” he said in his statement. Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal remain attached to the project.

Meanwhile, the cast has already seen one significant change. Last month, Paresh Rawal confirmed that Govinda — a lead in the beloved 2006 original directed by Priyadarshan — has exited the sequel. Manoj Bajpayee has since joined as one of the new leads, bringing his own dramatic weight to what is otherwise a slapstick comedy setup. That is a casting combination worth watching.

A Warning to the Wider Film Industry

The most striking part of Raaj’s statement was its final line. He asked members of the film and creative industry to “take note of the manner in which such pressure tactics are being employed and draw their own conclusions when deciding future professional associations.” That is not the language of someone simply defending himself. It is a public advisory.

For Bollywood’s director community — many of whom operate under long-term studio deals negotiated before their market value peaks — this dispute could become a reference point. How it resolves legally will matter well beyond Bhagam Bhag 2.
