Tangy imli sharbat summer drink recipe

When summer heat peaks, simple homemade drinks often feel far more refreshing than bottled beverages. One traditional cooler quietly making a comeback is imli sharbat. Made with tangy tamarind, jaggery, mint, and gentle spices, this drink delivers a balance of sweet, sour, and slightly spicy flavours that feel instantly cooling on hot afternoons.

Why Imli Sharbat Is A Classic Summer Cooling Drink

In many Indian kitchens, Tamarind has long been valued for its bold sweet-sour taste. It appears in chutneys, curries, sambars, and even refreshing drinks. Imli sharbat takes that strong flavour and transforms it into a cooling summer beverage that feels both light and satisfying.

The drink works because of its simple combination of ingredients. Tamarind provides the tang, Jaggery adds a warm natural sweetness, and spices give the sharbat its subtle kick. The result is a homemade cooler that tastes bright and refreshing rather than overly sugary.

There is also a nutritional reason the drink feels energising. Tamarind naturally contains small amounts of minerals such as iron and potassium along with antioxidants, according to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. While the amounts are modest, they add a small nutritional boost to the drink.

One sip often feels enough to reset your palate.

How Jaggery And Spices Make The Tamarind Drink Better

Unlike many sweet drinks that rely on refined sugar, imli sharbat can be prepared using jaggery. This traditional sweetener not only adds sweetness but also brings a slightly deeper flavour that pairs well with tamarind.

A few additional ingredients make the drink even more interesting.

Black Salt adds a gentle savoury note, while Roasted Cumin Powder introduces a warm, earthy aroma. These spices create a lightly spicy finish that balances the tangy tamarind.

Fresh Mint leaves complete the drink by adding brightness and freshness. On extremely hot days, mint makes the sharbat feel even lighter and more cooling.

It is a simple combination, but it works beautifully.

Simple Recipe To Make Tangy Imli Sharbat At Home

Making imli sharbat requires only a few ingredients and very little preparation time.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup ripe tamarind
  • 3 tablespoons jaggery powder
  • ½ teaspoon black salt
  • ½ teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • 8–10 mint leaves
  • 3 cups cold water
  • Ice cubes as needed

How To Make It

  1. Soak the tamarind in one cup of warm water for about 20 minutes. Mash it gently with your fingers and strain the pulp into a bowl.
  2. Add the tamarind pulp to a blender along with jaggery powder, black salt, roasted cumin powder, and mint leaves.
  3. Pour in one cup of cold water and blend until the mixture becomes smooth.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a jug and add the remaining cold water. Stir well so the flavours combine evenly.
  5. Add ice cubes and serve immediately.

A few fresh mint leaves or a pinch of roasted cumin on top can make the drink look even more refreshing.

A glass of imli sharbat remains a light beverage compared to many packaged drinks. The natural sweetness from jaggery provides quick energy, while tamarind adds small amounts of minerals.
