Pakistan’s star batter and former all-format captain, Babar Azam, achieved a historic milestone on Friday, December 13, by becoming the fastest player in the world to score 11,000 runs in T20 cricket. The prolific batter surpassed the legendary Chris Gayle record during the second T20I match against South Africa at SuperSport Park, Centurion.
Babar Azam, who debuted in T20 cricket on December 1, 2012, has now amassed 11,020 runs in just 298 innings across 309 matches. This extraordinary achievement breaks Chris Gayle’s previous record of reaching 11,000 T20 runs in 314 innings.
In the match, Babar came to bat at No. 3 for Pakistan and contributed 31 runs off 20 balls, hitting 3 fours and 1 six during his knock. Despite his relatively modest score in the game, the innings was enough to etch his name in the history books.
Chris Gayle, who remains the highest run-scorer in T20 cricket with 14,562 runs, reached the 11,000-run milestone in 314 innings. Babar Azam feat makes him the only batter in history to achieve this milestone in fewer than 300 innings. As of now, a total of 10 players have surpassed the 11,000-run mark in T20 cricket, but none have done it as quickly or consistently as Babar Azam.
