Modi government is continuously promoting India as an all-year global tourist destination by adding new tourism products in the country.
The BJP-led central government has made significant investments in tourism infrastructure since taking office in 2014. PM Modi has recognized the potential of the travel and tourism industry to become one of the country’s largest service industries, earning foreign exchange. In 2022 alone, the industry contributed around 15.7 lakh crore to the country’s economy. It is projected that this number could increase, adding about $250 billion to the GDP by 2030.
The remarkable annual growth rate of 10% last year, compared to the predicted growth rate of around 7% until 2028, is the result of consistent efforts to promote and develop the necessary infrastructure for this sector.
The Tourism Ministry has been working diligently to improve tourism infrastructure at various tourist destinations across states and union territories. They have allocated budgets for projects under schemes like Swadesh Darshan and Prasad to enhance visitor experiences.
To overcome the ‘seasonality’ challenge in tourism, the Modi government is continuously promoting India as an all-year tourist destination. They are adding new tourism products like Eco-tourism, Adventure, Wellness, Cruise, Medical, Golf, Polo, Sustainable Tourism, Film Tourism, etc.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term (Modi 3.0), the focus will remain on improving airports, railways, and road networks to ensure seamless travel experiences for both foreign and domestic tourists.
Efforts to develop world-class infrastructure across the country were evident in the budget2024 announced last month. The finance minister announced multiple plans to make the country a major tourism hub. Plans include better port connectivity, developing iconic tourist centers, developing heritage sites and spiritual tourist spots, enhancing accommodation options, and amenities for offbeat as well as unexplored places like Lakshadweep.
The government’s flagship initiatives, such as the Swadesh Darshan Scheme and the Prasad Scheme, where 52 tourism sector projects worth more than Rs 1400 crores were recently announced by Modiji. These schemes focus on integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits and aim to enhance pilgrimage experiences, receiving continued support and funding.
Modi 3.0 will mainly emphasize:
- Adopting sustainable tourism practices
- Promoting and developing heritage sites, lesser-known destinations, and rural tourism
- Implementing waste management strategies
- Conserving natural resources and providing economic opportunities to local communities
- Leveraging technology to improve visitor experiences (online booking systems, virtual tours, digital payment facilities)
Additionally, aggressive marketing campaigns, participation in international tourism events and expos, and collaboration with stakeholders to showcase India’s tourism potential will be prioritized. The Prime Minister’s Cabinet is also working on easing visa processes and enhancing safety and security measures for tourists.Making India a global tourism hub
