A constellation of media students will converge once again at Wilson college to continue the legacy of two decades. Polaris is an eagerly anticipated intercollegiate media festival that marks the vibrant beginning of the academic year for media students across Mumbai. This dynamic event draws media students from. Polaris Named after the Pole Star,it isn’t just one of Mumbai’s oldest mass media intercollegiate festivals; it’s a legendary convergence of creativity and talent.
Unique among the mass media festivals in Mumbai, Polaris stands out not only for its innovative programs and interactive workshops but also for its distinctive mascot, Polly the Purple Cow. Inspired by Seth Godin’s marketing classic, “Purple Cow,” Polly represents creativity, distinctiveness, and the courage to be remarkable in a crowded field.
Polaris has always prioritized sustainability and green initiatives. Unlike other fests, it has featured methods which generate the least waste, with all decorations made using reusable materials. It also does not offer any flexes and advertises its sponsors using digital billboards. One notable project involved the distribution of over 100 raincoats to laborers and service providers, ensuring they were equipped to face the heavy Bombay rains.
Further showcasing its allegiance to sustainability is the theme of Polaris 2024. ‘The Enchanted Forest’ tells the story of Polly’s home – a place inhabited by mythical and magical flaura and fauna. Polly is shaken by the environmental disaster unfolding in the forest and she vows to save it and her friends. This theme aims to highlight the environmental degradation caused by climate change and to reignite discourse around the same.
In addition to the social initiatives, Polaris dedicates a special day to Media Marvels. This event features insightful workshops and talks by esteemed industry experts from various fields of media. These sessions provide students with invaluable knowledge and insights into the ever-evolving media landscape, helping them to better prepare for their future careers. Last year, polaris had the privilege of hosting speakers like Jash Kriplani, who discussed the dynamics of changing media and AI, and Jayesh Shikarkane, a creative director, among others.
Polaris is more than just a fest; it’s a celebration that media students eagerly look forward to each year, celebrating their passion for media and setting the tone for all the other festivals for the rest of the academic journey. This year’s organizing committee, despite facing numerous challenges, is dedicated to ensuring that Polaris leaves a lasting impact. Digital partner for the event was Times Applaud. A lot of effort and insight goes into this prestigious media fest called Polaris.
