30th ODI Century: How Rohit Sharma broke Azharuddin’s record

Rohit Sharma has equaled Ricky Ponting in terms of most ODI centuries. Sachin Tendulkar has the most number of centuries in ODIs with 49, followed by Virat Kohli with 45.

Rohit Sharma scored his 30th ODI century in the last match of the ODI series against New Zealand. Rohit Sharma now has the same number of ODI hundreds as Ricky Ponting.

Sachin Tendulkar has the most ODI centuries (49), followed by former Indian captain Virat Kohli, who has 45 centuries.

Rohit Sharma and Ricky Ponting are currently tied for third place, having each achieved 30 hundreds. Rohit Sharma will surpass Ricky Ponting when it comes to another ODI century. Rohit Sharma is also the captain of Team India.

By the way, every time Rohit Sharma steps onto the field, he either sets a new record or is on the verge of doing so, but on Tuesday, he set a new record, which Rohit is likely to be aware of. Rohit Sharma has now become Team India’s oldest ODI skipper to score a century. He has completed the task of beating former skipper Azharuddin’s record.

Rohit Sharma was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra on April 30, 1987. On January 24, 2023, Rohit Sharma will be 35 years and 269 days old. On the same day, he hit a century in the third One-Day International against New Zealand at Indore. He is now the oldest Indian player to score an ODI century as captain.

Previously, this record was in the name of Azhar. At the age of 35 years and 224 days, Azharuddin hit an ODI century as captain. On September 20, 1998, Azharuddin made a century as captain in the fifth one-day match in Toronto. This was also Azhar’s final ODI century. He continued to play cricket after 1998 until 2000, although he did not score a single century. Azhar last played an ODI on June 3, 2000, captained by Sourav Ganguly.

By the way, if we talk about this ranking, former captain Rahul Dravid, who is now Team India’s head coach, comes in at number three. At the age of 33 years and 127 days, former skipper Rahul Dravid achieved his first ODI century as captain. Rahul Dravid’s final ODI century as captain came on March 18, 2006, against the West Indies in Kingston. He was also the team’s captain at the time. Rahul Dravid continued to play ODIs till September 16, 2011, however he did not score a single century. Rahul Dravid retired after playing his final ODI under MS Dhoni’s leadership.

Despite setting a new milestone, Rohit Sharma has a chance to score a century as a captain at an even later age. Rohit Sharma is expected to head the Indian squad at least till the ODI World Cup in 2023.

The World Cup will be held solely in India. The issue is if Rohit Sharma can reach a century during this time frame. If the century occurs, it will be impossible for any other batsman-captain to break Rohit Sharma’s record.
