Rising Waters, Losing Hope: Assam’s Tragic Flood Scenario Leaves 1.2 Lakh in Trouble

An official statement claimed that Assam’s flood situation was still dire on Thursday morning as relentless rain inundated new places throughout the state and affected almost 1.2 lakh people in ten districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts “very heavy” to “extremely heavy” rainfall in several Assam districts over the next few days.

The warning has been issued by IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati for 24 hours starting on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will then be under a “yellow” alert. ‘Orange’ warnings mean get ready to act, while ‘yellow’ alerts mean keep an eye on things and stay informed. Over 1, 19,800 people are affected by the flood in the districts of Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur, and Udalguri, according to an ASDMA flood report. According to the report, Lakhimpur has more than 25,000 victims, followed by Baksa with over 26,500 and Nalbari with about 45,000.

2,091 persons have required shelter in 14 relief camps established by the administration in five districts, as well as 17 aid distribution sites. 1280 persons have been rescued from various locations by the army, paramilitary forces, National Disaster Response Force, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES), civil administrations, NGOs, and residents. According to the ASDMA bulletin, 780 villages are currently under water, and 10,591.85 hectares of cropland have been devastated throughout Assam.

It added that Baksa, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, South Salmara, and Udalguri had all seen significant damage. There have been reports of landslides in Kamrup Metropolitan and Dima Hasao due to heavy rain.

Urban areas were flooded in numerous locations throughout the districts of Barpeta, Darrang, Kamrup Metropolitan, Kokrajhar, and Nalbari. The ASDMA report noted that the Beki tributary of the Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger line in three locations.
