Heavy Rainfall Alert: 5 Karnataka Districts Shut Down Schools and Colleges for Safety Measures

In five Karnataka districts, all schools and colleges have been ordered closed due to the recent severe rains. Due to severe waterlogging in the areas, a holiday has been declared for the educational institutions in the districts of Mangaluru, Mulki, Ullal, Moodbidri, and Bantwal.

According to news agency ANI, Dakshina Kannada DC Mulai Mugilan announced the vacation in a statement. “Due to excessive rain in the region, the holiday has been announced by the District authority in all schools and colleges in Mangaluru, Mulki, Ullal, Moodbidri and Bantwal.”

The Orange Alert from IMD

On Monday, Mangaluru saw severe traffic congestion as a result of numerous low-lying areas, including the city’s busy Pumpwell Road, being flooded by heavy rains. The main road leading to Mangaluru is blocked by knee-high floodwater beneath the Pumpwell flyover. Some automobiles became submerged.

Due to the nonstop rain, buses and other vehicles headed from the Mangaluru city region to Talapady, Tokkottu, and B C Road have become trapped.  Vehicles are being diverted to alternate routes, and traffic police have been deployed in places that are under water. At Kottara Chowki junction, flooding and traffic jams have also been caused by recent heavy rain. Flooding and waterlogging problems affect the crossroads at Pumpwell and Kottara Chowki every year.

Meanwhile, the Dakshina Kannada district is under an orange alert until July 7 due to the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of heavy rain for the next five days.

Orange alerts have been indicated for all other districts in the neighboring state of Kerala, while red alerts have been issued for two districts there.
