Manipur Police Takes Swift Action, Arrests Main Culprit in Naked Parade Case

According to Chief Minister Biren Singh, the police arrested the alleged perpetrator of the incident in which two tribal women were assaulted and paraded around naked. A 26-second video taken on May 4 recently went viral and showed the suspect.

We detained the primary offender last night at roughly 1.30 am, Singh said. “When I watched the footage, I was horrified; it’s a crime against humanity. I quickly gave the police orders to detain the offenders, and the state government will work to enforce the law.

A case of kidnapping, gang rape, and murder against unidentified armed criminals had been reported to police on Wednesday, according to a statement from the police, and all-out efforts were being made to apprehend the suspects as soon as possible.

Due to an ongoing investigation, the government has requested that videos of two Manipur women being paraded in their knickers be removed from Twitter and other social media platforms. The videos, according to sources, were controversial and Twitter and other social media sites have been ordered to take them down while the situation is being investigated.

Outrage has been generated by the widely shared Manipur video showing a gang of men abusing two women. The video was making the rounds just before the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) announced a planned protest march on Thursday to draw attention to their predicament.

Since May 3, Manipur has experienced violent protests by the Kuki and Naga groups in response to the High Court’s ruling requesting that the state government consider adding the Meitei community to the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST). Hilly land can only be purchased by STs.

The main Meitei community, which lives in the Imphal valley and the surrounding areas, applied for the ST designation in order to purchase land in the mountainous areas due to their growing population and rising need for land.

One of the 31 pieces of legislation on the government’s agenda for the monsoon session of Parliament, which starts on Thursday, is the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023.

Parliament’s monsoon session will last till August 11. The program will include a total of 17 sittings, beginning in the former Parliament Building.
