Laptop and tablet import ban: Govt extends 3-month grace period

Laptop and tablet import ban: The government just created a license framework for laptops, tablets, and personal computers, but it is giving corporations a “transition period” to adapt. Concerns were expressed that the limits might cause supply shortages and pricing rises for certain gadgets. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s announcement states that the new import regulation will take effect on November 1 after October 31.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, minister of state for IT & electronics, promised the industry a transition period before the restrictions were applied. Samsung, Dell, and Apple had to stop shipments into the nation because they needed a license from August 4 to maintain their supply chain. The government gave them 12 hours to adjust.

The laptop, tablet, and PC import restriction reportedly protects citizens. The government wants to make sure these things come from “trusted sources” to avoid security risks and preserve personal data. Laptops, tablets, PCs, tyres, TVs, and ACs are now forbidden imports. China, South Korea, and Vietnam are major importers.

DGFT exemptions exist despite the new limits. Only one piece of personal luggage or internet imports will be permitted into the nation. Research exemptions enable 20 capital goods.

Even with a Rs 17,000 crore incentive, the government’s hardware PLI (Production-Linked Incentive) plan failed to attract participation.

Conclusion:-

The government has licensed the import of laptops, tablets, and PCs, but enterprises have a “transition period” to adapt. The new import regulations take effect on October 31 and November 1. Protecting citizens and sensitive data is the goal. Laptops, tablets, PCs, tires, TVs, and air conditioners are forbidden imports. China, South Korea, and Vietnam are major importers. DGFT exemptions include personal luggage, internet imports, and research. Even with a higher reward, the government’s hardware PLI (Production-Linked reward) plan failed to attract participants.
