On February 10 of this year, during the Budget session, Rajani Patil was placed on administrative leave for allegedly recording House proceedings and posting them on social media in violation of Rajya Sabha rules.
Rajani Patil, a Congress member, had her suspension lifted by the Rajya Sabha on Monday through a voice vote. During the Budget session, Patil was removed from the Upper House for breaking house rules by recording the proceedings and broadcasting it outside. After the House approved a motion for her suspension, she was put on leave. BJP MP Saroj Pandey said the panel recommended that Patil be found guilty of breaching privilege in the 74th report of the Committee of Privileges. She continued by saying that the panel also suggested that Patil’s suspension from the House be deemed sufficient and lifted as of Monday, (August 7, 2023).
Ever since the monsoon session began, the Parliament has experienced numerous adjournments. Members of the Treasury benches requested to examine issues pertaining to the law and order situation in Rajasthan, while the opposition parties urged a discussion on the violence in Manipur. Rahul Gandhi, a Wayanad MP, had his membership in the Lok Sabha restored earlier in the day after the Supreme Court on Friday, August 4, delayed his conviction in the “Modi” surname comment case. In addition, Rahul changed the title of his Twitter account from “Disqualified MP” to “Member of Parliament” after being reinstated in the Lower House.
Rahul’s conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court because the trial court in Surat, Gujarat, did not adequately justify Rahul’s conviction, which resulted in his exclusion from the Lower House of Parliament and the maximum two-year sentence. The top court added that if the sentence had been one day shorter, it would not have resulted in disqualification.
