Over 40 million selfies have been submitted to the government’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign through their online portal.

Har Ghar Tiranga, an initiative of the central government, has received over 40 million selfie submissions by people nationwide from August 13th to 15th; coinciding with India’s 77th Independence Day festivities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged citizens to participate in this initiative before Independence Day festivities began; through social media posts, he encouraged individuals to change their profile pictures to feature the national flag, contributing their effort ahead of the major celebration day.

On Har Ghar Tiranga’s website, the statistics reveal an impressive total of 43,644,013 selfies featuring the Tricolor. Their homepage has been revamped to allow users to upload selfies easily; upon entering, users are given two choices – either upload a selfie featuring the flag or submit digital representations of the Tiranga.

As one scroll down the website, one can view pictures of Union ministers, actors and sports personalities proudly holding up the Indian flag. On this second Independence Day of Amrit Kal (the era of freedom), various events are scheduled throughout the week to commemorate this historic occasion – such as Har Ghar Tiranga campaigns as well as silent processions on Partition Day (August 14th) that remember and pay homage to victims of violence during that tumultuous period.

Around 1,800 special guests from different parts of India are expected to participate in Prime Minister Modi’s Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremony at Delhi’s historic Red Fort on August 15.

As Independence Day celebrations approach, Delhi police have tightened security checks throughout the national capital.
