Weather Alert: Cyclone Michaung Set to Make Landfall in Andhra Pradesh Today

The Chennai International Airport Authority declared the airfield operational for all arrival and departure operations on Tuesday following the rains caused by Cyclone Michaung.

Travelers and the aviation community are relieved by this timely notification, as it allows them to continue their trips without any obstacle Chennai (MAA) Airport stated, “Airfield now open for all arrival and departure operations,” in a post on X. The most recent IMD bulletin states that light to moderate rainfall is anticipated in most areas of north-coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with isolated areas seeing severe rainfall on Tuesday morning before conditions gradually improve.

“On track-while searches (TWSs) and range-while scans (RWSs), there is no water stagnation.” Still, a lot of slush and filth is discovered. The airport authorities said in an official statement that four CFTs (contracted flying training and support) have been dispatched to clear the area and that laborers are also working on cleaning tasks. The statement went on to say, “The Chennai Team confirmed that all Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) facilities’ communications, navigation, and surveillance systems are operating normally.” Airlines and other relevant parties have been notified to arrange their operations appropriately in the interim. AAI would use social media to share this knowledge with the broader population.

The airport authorities also said that there are about 1500 passengers (passengers carried by an airline) at the terminals and 21 planes on the ground. “F&B Concessionaire has made sure that their establishments have a sufficient supply of food.” In the statement, it was stated that the Chennai Airport Team has been instructed to make sure that all passenger amenities, including trollies, are available and that terminals are well maintained.

MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, visited the regions of the state devastated by Cyclone Michaung on Tuesday morning. The Chief Minister specifically went to the rain-relief camp that was set up at Chennai’s Kannapar Thital. 162 centers—43 of which are presently operational—are part of the relief operations, serving the needs of 2,477 Chennai citizens.

Twenty kitchens are also operational to serve food to the people living in these aid centers. To guarantee that food is available for people taking refuge in the relief camps, the state government has inquired with authorities about the quality and availability of pre-made commodities such as rice, dal, and vegetables in light of the current circumstances.

Residents and commuters in the impacted zones experienced discomfort and difficulty as a result of the flooding of these regions, which highlighted the problems presented by the ongoing severe rains.
