PM’s Tech Warning: New-age Threats Discussed as Deepfakes Take Center Stage at Smart India Hackathon

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought attention to the problem of deepfakes on social media once more, claiming that images and videos produced by AI appear authentic. He advised people to exercise extreme caution before accepting the veracity of the medium. During the Smart India Hackathon’s big finale, PM Modi spoke with students and emphasized the importance of exercising caution when utilizing new technology.

“With new technologies, we need to exercise caution. These may be quite helpful if utilized properly. But if they are used improperly, it might lead to serious issues. Deepfake films created with the help of generative AI are something you should be wary of, he stated. “Since these movies appear quite genuine, we must exercise extreme caution when accepting the veracity of any image or video. India is placing a strong focus on an international AI framework,” the prime minister continued.

In response to deepfake videos of numerous Bollywood celebrities, including Rashmika Mandanna and Kajol, appearing on social media, PM Modi made remarks that sparked worries about the possible abuse of artificial intelligence.

Deepfake is a technique that manipulates images or videos using artificial intelligence (AI) to allow a person to pose as someone else and say or do things that never happened.

PM MODI’S PREVIOUS WORRIES ABOUT DEEPFAKES

On November 22, Prime Minister Modi addressed the issue of deepfakes on social media and advocated for “global regulations for AI” during the virtual G20 meeting. He claimed that society should be secure using AI.

“The detrimental impacts of AI are a concern to the entire globe. India believes that international AI legislation needs to be developed together. We must go on now that we are aware of how harmful deepfakes are to both society and the individual. “AI needs to be safe for society if we want it to reach the general public,” he stated. On November 17, Prime Minister Modi stated that deepfakes had the potential to destabilize society and cited them as one of the greatest risks now confronting the Indian system. In addition, he asked the media to inform the public about the growing issue.

PM Modi used a deepfake video of himself doing Garba when speaking to reporters at the BJP’s Diwali Milan event at Delhi BJP headquarters. India Today fact-checked the video. He described the video as “very real” and said that he hadn’t “played Garba” since he was a child.
