To show support for the people of Gaza, Pakistan’s acting Prime Minister, Anwaarul Haq Kakar, declared on Thursday that the nation will no longer celebrate New Year’s Day.

In a brief speech to the country, Kakar called on everyone to observe sobriety and humility on New Year’s Eve and to express solidarity with the Palestinian people.

“The government will strictly forbid holding any kind of event for New Year’s in light of the extremely worrisome situation in Palestine and solidarity with our Palestinian brothers and sisters,” he said.

He said that since the Israeli bombing started, over 21,000 Palestinians had died at the hands of Israeli troops that “crossed all limits of violence and injustice,” with almost 9,000 of those deaths being children.

The murder of defenseless children and the extermination of unarmed Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have left the whole Muslim world and the country of Pakistan in utter agony.” According to him, Pakistan has sent two assistance packages to Palestine and is now preparing a third.

According to him, Pakistan was in negotiations with Jordan and Egypt to deliver relief to Palestine on time and to evacuate Gaza’s injured population. According to Kakar, Pakistan tries to draw attention to the suffering of the Palestinian people in international forums, and it will keep trying in the future to put an end to the Israeli massacres.
