In a single year, the current government of India has announced five Bharat Ratna awards, a first in the country’s independent history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Friday that Dr. MS Swaminathan, the pioneer of India’s “green revolution,” and two previous prime ministers, Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao, will receive the Bharat Ratna.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ official statistics, 2024 will go down in history as the year with the most Bharat Ratna winners since the awards’ establishment in 1954. Four persons received the Bharat Ratna award in 1999, the year before this.
