Parents Beware: New AI Scam Used Daughter’s Voice to Dupe Her Mom

Cybercriminals are always developing new ways to trick smartphone users worldwide. Prior until this, regular people have lost money and personal information to video call scammers, OTP scams, and other schemes. Similarly, a brand-new scam has emerged that could take advantage of your feelings and cost you a significant amount of money.

Despite the Indian government’s efforts to combat cybercrime and its punitive measures, hackers continue to devise novel techniques to deceive people through the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Distressed voice of the daughter clone fraud

Artificial intelligence is being utilized to deceive people and take advantage of their emotions. In keeping with this pattern, a fresh fraud involving artificial intelligence vocal cloning has emerged, in which hackers assume the voice of a family member—a daughter, father, son, or other relative, for example.

A user of X, the former name of Twitter, recently reported such an occurrence on the social media network. Kaveri, an X user, wrote about an instance of AI voice copying. She mentioned in her post that she received a call posing as a police officer from an unknown number. Her daughter was in serious trouble, he claimed.

The con artist, who pretended to be a police official, called Kaveri and claimed that her daughter and three other friends had been taken into custody and that the police had recorded the son of an MLA. In addition to threatening the X user, the caller featured a voice that sounded exactly like her daughter and used the distressing phrase “Mumma mujhe bacha lo” (mother, save me).

The mother was suspicious that she was being duped even though the voice sounded like Kaveri’s daughter’s and the way she was speaking was peculiar.

Kaveri urged people to stay away from these scams through messages on social media. On the X platform, her post had about 7 lakh views by itself.

How are these scams reported?

You should notify your telecom service provider of any impending contact from an unknown number if you have also seen an AI voice clone scam of this kind.

To protect yourself and others from frauds, you can report the issue via the Sanchar Sathi Chakshu webpage.

Other internet frauds

In addition to this, people are alerting social media users to a new kind of fraud in which con artists pose as representatives of the telecom department and threaten phone users to block their numbers. When they are finished, they are prompted to press ‘9’ to transfer the call to the Department of Telecommunications’ IVR in order to keep the number alive. Following this, the hackers steal the user’s personal information by posing as Department of Telecommunications customer service officials.

You can report these calls on the Chakshu portal as well.
