Public Forgives These Perverts In A Jiffy: Sona Mohapatra On Hema Committee Report

Sona Mohapatra has always viewed herself not as a victim, but as a fighter in her battle against sexual harassment in the entertainment industry. She was one of the first to publicly accuse music composer Anu Malik of making inappropriate comments and harassing her, a bold move that highlighted the pervasive issues within the industry.

Although Sona Mohapatra’s early advocacy was a significant part of the #MeToo movement in India, the momentum of the movement gradually declined over time. However, recent developments, such as the Hema Committee report exposing the casting couch culture and power dynamics in the Malayalam film industry, have reignited discussions on these critical issues.

When asked if she expects positive changes following the release of the Hema Committee report, Sona Mohapatra reflects on the ongoing struggle. Despite facing professional setbacks for speaking out, she remains undeterred and underscores the importance of persistence. For Mohapatra, the fight against injustice is ongoing, and she believes that continuous advocacy is essential for meaningful change in the industry.

She said, “I do believe it is better than before in the Hindi film industry. The conversations have raised awareness about appropriate behaviour in the workplace for sure. Many production houses have put some redressal mechanisms in place where there is a form available for people to report untoward behaviour and escalate matters. There is a better awareness of the POSH guidelines too. The world is getting better and that is a wonderful feeling to carry.”

She further added, “Public memory is indeed short and forgives these perverts in a jiffy. While I am finally back on the saddle after my vanwaas having launched a new show, Lal Pari Mastani, making my own documentary and winning awards across the world, I do believe this report is a validation of what many of us are fighting for—safer workplaces and winning, based on merit and fair opportunity.”

Mohapatra’s journey serves as a reminder that while progress may be slow, the battle against sexual harassment and inequality in the entertainment industry must continue. Her unwavering commitment to the cause, even in the face of personal and professional challenges, highlights the importance of standing up for what is right, regardless of the obstacles.
