Anxiety is a natural response shown by your body when you are under some stress. It results from a combination of factors which may be external like your environment or internal such as a feeling of fear or worry. It is more common in women for various reasons such as society expectations, household work, overseeing childcare or keeping up with the boss’s expectations at work.
Control your Thoughts – Anxiety is usually connected to your thoughts. When you ponder over past mistakes and regrets or think of tasks that could not be completed on time, your body responds with a feeling of unease. The feeling of anxiety is accompanied with rushed adrenaline, increased heart rate and a spike in blood sugar. To reduce your body’s reactivity, it is important to consciously bring your thoughts back to the present. This will reassure you that things are not as bad as you thought. So, the next time you feel anxious, take a few deep breaths, have some water and try to think of five things you can see or smell.
Follow a Workout Routine – Some of us live with a constant level of anxiety while others might feel anxious when faced with challenging situations. Either way, it is advisable to release the anxiety physically on a routine basis. Follow a consistent exercise regime daily that will help dissipate such feelings.
Ditch Caffeine – Caffeine is known to increase alertness which is probably the reason workaholics consume a lot of caffeine. There are others who love coffee dates with friends to relax and unwind. While Caffeine drug blocks adenosine, a chemical that makes you feel tired, it also triggers the release of adrenaline that can ultimately lead to anxiety. So, if you suffer from anxiety issues, stop drinking cofee.
Prioritize Sleep – Lack of sleep can exacerbate anxiety. Ensure you’re getting enough rest to help your body and mind recover, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety.
Build a Support System – Talk to friends, family, or a therapist. Sharing your thoughts with someone can help you gain perspective and reduce feelings of isolation, which often accompany anxiety.
